The purpose of this lab was to learn about GMOs by conducting our own modification of bacteria. The goal of the lab was to make the bacteria glow under a UV light.
Using the lab, we inserted the pGLO plasmid into harmless E. coli. We plated the bacteria in different plate environments. We also ran negative controls.
Plasmid - A part of the cell that can replicate independently. GMO - A genetically modified organism. pGLO - The plasmid that we inserted into the bacteria to make them glow under UV light. It was taken from a glowing jellyfish.
This lab was pretty fun. I enjoyed the complex lab procedure and felt that it challenged me (in a good way). My group was great. We worked together and shared the work very well. The pits would be that we did not keep it sterile and therefore, the lab did not work. Our plates were contaminated. Another pit would be that we messed up the procedure (which allowed it to get contaminated)
