We started this project in October. My team has decided to use water polo as our sport.
We have finished editing our videos. Because of some privacy concerns, I am unable to post our video on my website.
Project Reflection: In this project we were tasked with making a video that explains how to do a sport's action better using physics. My group decided on a Water Polo skip shot. We choose this because it was something different. We used our phones to film and imovie to edit.. We had several days to complete our video and will be showing them off at our film festival. The date of the festival is to be determined.
Useful terms we used while creating our video: Velocity (The change in distance divided by the change in time)- The rate of distance covered in a specific amount of time. We used velocity to find out how fast the ball was moving. We also used it to find force. Velocity is in the unit m/s (meters per second). Velocity is similar to speed but includes direction. In our video we used velocity to describe the ball as it was traveling. Force of impact (mv=Ft)- This equation is useful to find mass, velocity, force, or time. When making our video we used this equation a lot because we normally we able to find 3 of the 4 variables. We used force of impact when the ball made contact with the water and when it was being thrown by the player. Acceleration (The change in velocity)- Acceleration is used in sports a lot. When something hits something else it accelerates. It is measured in m/s^2. The acceleration due to gravity is 9.8 m/s^2). The Water Polo ball decelerated after it hit the water. Force (F=ma)- The push or pull on an object that causes a change in motion. The player exerted a force on the ball. Momentum (p=mv)- The tendency for objects to keep moving. Impulse (J=Ft)- How long and how forcefully something is impacted/pushed. This is used in sports every time something comes in contact with something else like a ball on a bat or the ball and the pitcher’s hand.
Overall I felt this project went well. All of my teammates did work and the project was completed to our satisfaction by the deadline. Looking back, I wish we would have spent more time on our calculation part (some of the numbers could be more accurate) and filmed more video. Since we had to film at a pool our video of us doing a skip shot was limited. At the end we were getting repetitive so we had to use youtube video in addition to our video. I wish that we could have avoided using youtube because the video quality is poor and the color saturation is different in each video. I was able to correct some of the issues while editing but it is still obvious where we pulled in a youtube video. I am however happy with the humor we added to our video. Our video is longer than most of the others but since we made it funny and put visuals on screen it does not feel long. I also liked how we used slow motion to make certain points more clear. I feel this project was easier than the Rube Goldberg Machines and my team had a clearer vision going into filming. Our teamwork and overall time management was improved in this project.
Above is a slide showing some scenes from our video since we could not post the real thing. I apologize for the poor quality.
